Labuschagne’s Bold Test Return: Ready to Open for Australia

Marnus Labuschagne is preparing for a bold Test return, expressing his willingness to open the batting for Australia if that’s what it takes to rejoin the Test XI. Known for his consistent performances over the years, Labuschagne has recently faced a dip in red-ball form, leading to his omission from the West Indies tour.

While he is expected to feature in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa—especially after the retirements of Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell—Labuschagne has his sights firmly set on the home Ashes series later this summer. With Cameron Green occupying the No.3 spot in the West Indies series, Labuschagne sees opening as a viable path for his Test return.

“I have batted at three my whole career, but at this stage you don’t get a choice,” Labuschagne told News Corp. “I opened in the World Test Championship final and felt good at the crease. If opening is the way back into the Test team, I’m happy to take it.”

The moment he learned about being dropped, Labuschagne’s focus shifted immediately to the Ashes. Australia won’t play another Test before the marquee series, giving him a few months to prepare. He plans to use three Sheffield Shield matches and the ODI series to sharpen his form ahead of his targeted Test return.

“It was tough because you never want to be dropped,” he admitted. “But almost as soon as the selectors told me, my mind went to, ‘How am I playing the Ashes? How do I make that happen?’”

Being sidelined has also allowed him to reflect on his game without external pressure. “This has been a chance to work without the constant noise,” he said. “I thrive on proving doubters wrong and finding a way back. Missing those West Indies Tests has only strengthened my desire for a successful Test return.”
