James Coles delivered a standout performance on debut, contributing crucial runs with the bat before backing it up with decisive wickets, as SEC underlined their dominance in this edition of the tournament.
Coles’ Batting Lifts SEC to a Competitive Total
Asked to bat first on a surface offering grip, Sunrisers Eastern Cape posted a strong 178 for 5. Quinton de Kock and Jonny Bairstow set the early tone, with de Kock continuing his excellent form by registering his third half-century of the season, scoring a fluent 54 off 37 deliveries.
SEC cruised to 88 for 1 at the halfway stage before Joburg Super Kings fought back through Donovan Ferreira, who struck twice in one over to remove Jordan Hermann and de Kock. Those breakthroughs briefly slowed the momentum and brought debutant James Coles to the crease, replacing Tharindu Rathnayake who was unavailable due to national duties.
Coles and Tristan Stubbs initially found scoring difficult on the slowing pitch, with SEC reaching only 129 for 4 after 16 overs. However, the timeout proved decisive.

Chasing 179 was always going to be a tall order for Joburg Super Kings, with no team successfully chasing more than 165 at the ground this season. JSK started positively through Rivaldo Moonsamy and James Vince, who raced to 30 without loss inside three overs.
James Coles made an immediate impact with the ball, dismissing Moonsamy with his third delivery and conceding just three runs in the over. Tight spells from Adam Milne and Anrich Nortje compounded the pressure, restricting JSK to 39 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.
Middle-Order Collapse Seals SEC’s Win
