Bangladesh middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy highlighted the team’s mindset after their Asia Cup 2025 opening victory over Hong Kong, insisting that Bangladesh always prioritize winning over chasing faster runs.
Even though Afghanistan had beaten Hong Kong by 94 runs earlier, raising discussions about net run rate, Hridoy insisted that Bangladesh are focused on securing victories against stronger sides like Afghanistan and Sri Lanka rather than complicating their tournament early.
Smart cricket over risky cricket
Hridoy scored a steady 35 off 36 balls in the chase of 144, allowing Litton Das to accelerate with attacking strokes. The partnership ensured Bangladesh won by seven wickets with 14 balls to spare, keeping their momentum intact.
“We could have finished the game earlier but we stuck to the demand of the situation. Our mentality is to always win,” Hridoy said.
“We wanted to ensure the match didn’t slip away. The result is more important than finishing one or two overs earlier.”
He emphasized that Bangladesh must focus on partnerships and avoid unnecessary risks, especially in the early stages of the tournament.
Run rate not a concern
With Afghanistan ahead on net run rate (+3.699), many speculated that Bangladesh might aim for faster finishes to improve their NRR. But Hridoy dismissed those suggestions.
“We want to beat Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, so run-rate isn’t what we are worried about at this stage. We don’t want to complicate matters so early in the tournament,” he explained.
Adapting to tricky conditions
Hridoy also spoke about the challenge of facing Hong Kong, a relatively unfamiliar side, and how Bangladesh adjusted to the Abu Dhabi surface.
“Anything can happen in T20 cricket. Hong Kong or whichever team, they can become big on the day. We treat every team the same whenever we are at the ground.
It was a bit tricky. The ball was gripping. We are not used to playing in this type of wicket but we adapted well.”
Hong Kong captain reflects on defeat
Meanwhile, Hong Kong skipper Yasim Murtaza admitted that his team was short of runs despite their batters showing promise.
“We were 20 to 30 runs short. I am happy with the batters but would have been happier if one of them got 60 to 70 runs as that would have got us a big total,” Murtaza said.
“Bangladesh built a good partnership and took the game away from us.”
