Joe Root Test century in Australia — it’s the one milestone that has eluded England’s modern batting maestro. As the Ashes 2025 approaches, Joe Root has declared that he feels “ready for it,” determined to finally score his first Test hundred on Australian soil.
The England star has played 27 innings in Australia but hasn’t yet converted any of his nine fifties into a century. His highest score there remains 89, achieved during the 2021 Ashes in Brisbane. This time, Root believes he’s better prepared mentally and technically to achieve the elusive Joe Root Test century in Australia.
“But I feel ready for it,” Root told Sky Sports. “Big series are the ones you want to play in and contribute in.”
Over the past few years, Root has redefined consistency in Test cricket. He topped the global run charts in 2021 with a staggering 1708 runs — well ahead of Rohit Sharma’s 908 — and continued his brilliance with 1098 in 2022, 787 in 2023, and 1556 in 2024. Already in 2025, he has 571 runs from just 10 innings. His relentless form recently pushed him past Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test history.
Heading back to Australia without the weight of captaincy, Root says he feels free and confident. “I feel I am in a different place to when I last went out there. I haven’t got the responsibility of captaincy, and I am a lot more experienced,” the 34-year-old said. “I have learned good lessons from my previous tours there as a batter and senior player.”
Root emphasized that his focus isn’t on personal accolades but on helping England reclaim the Ashes. “If I am doing my role in the team, then personal accolades will come. But the main goal is to win that urn back — it’s been too long since we held it.”
Under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England have developed an aggressive and fearless style of play, and Root believes that approach could be the key to success in Australia. “We have some serious resources to take out there and hit Australia with,” he added. “Hopefully, if I’m scoring heavily, it gives us a great chance.”
The five-match Ashes series begins on November 21 in Perth, and all eyes will be on Joe Root — as he seeks to finally achieve his long-awaited Test century in Australia.
