The former Australian captain Steve Waugh and Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell headline a high-profile ownership group, joined by former New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Mills and ex-international Nathan McCullum. The announcement was made in Sydney, where league officials confirmed the first three franchises representing Amsterdam, Belfast and Edinburgh.
According to league owner Abhishek Bachchan, preparations have been underway for over two years. He confirmed that the remaining three teams will be unveiled next month, with the organisers confident that the league is finally ready to take off. The Edinburgh team will be promoted by Kyle Mills and Nathan McCullum, while Glenn Maxwell will lead the Belfast-based franchise alongside former NRMA Group CEO Rohan Lund and additional strategic partners.
Waugh highlighted that the project appealed to him due to its long-term ambitions and developmental focus. He emphasised the importance of upholding cricketing values while helping the game expand into Europe, which he described as the sport’s final major frontier.
Maxwell, meanwhile, expressed excitement about leading an Irish franchise, stating that the goal is to build a fearless and entertaining brand of cricket. He also credited Cricket Ireland for its progress over the past two decades and believes the ETPL can significantly accelerate the game’s growth in the region.
The August–September window allows the league to avoid clashes with The Hundred in England and Major League Cricket in the USA, though it will slightly overlap with the Caribbean Premier League. Discussions around the salary cap and broadcast schedules are ongoing, with final details expected once all six franchises are confirmed.
The European T20 Premier League is an ICC-sanctioned, multi-nation franchise tournament supported by the cricket boards of the Netherlands, Ireland and Scotland. Featuring six teams and 34 matches, the ETPL was initially planned for last year before being postponed.
