The Asia Cup 2025 Trophy Controversy has sparked headlines around the cricketing world. India may have beaten Pakistan by five wickets in Dubai to lift the Asia Cup, but the champions walked away without their prize. A tug-of-war over who would present the trophy escalated into a major boardroom battle, adding yet another twist to the India–Pakistan rivalry.
How the controversy unfolded
Soon after India’s win, a dispute arose when ACC president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi insisted that he alone had the right to present the trophy. The Indian team flatly refused to accept the silverware from him. With no compromise in sight, the presentation ceremony descended into chaos, leaving the winners without their cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later hardened its stance. Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed India would escalate the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC). He stated:
“We have decided not to take the trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main leaders of Pakistan. We hope that the trophy and the medals will be returned to India as soon as possible.”
Political overtones make matters worse
The situation worsened when Naqvi issued a sharp response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s congratulatory post on social media. Modi had written, “#OperationSindoor on the games field. Outcome is the same – India wins!” Naqvi’s reply, partly geoblocked in India, linked cricket with war, a move widely criticized as “unsporting” and “desperate.”
ACC meeting set to take center stage
With the ICC meeting scheduled for November in Dubai, the BCCI plans to lodge a formal protest. But before that, attention turns to the ACC meeting on September 30 in Dubai, where the Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy is expected to dominate discussions.
The drama isn’t new—tensions began even before the tournament started, when Pakistan demanded Waqar Younis be included in the toss proceedings alongside Ravi Shastri. This foreshadowed the disputes that culminated in the botched trophy presentation.
Fallout and unfinished business
More than 45 minutes after the final, the ceremony ended with India only collecting individual awards from sponsors. Host Simon Doull had to announce:
“Ladies and gentlemen, I have been informed by the ACC that the Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight. So that does conclude the post-match presentation.”
As of now, the trophy remains in limbo. Naqvi has reportedly offered to present the medals and trophy in a separate function, but the likelihood of such an event is slim. The Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy has now spilled into cricket’s boardrooms, where the next chapters will be written.
